Why work at The Hurst School?

The Hurst School is a semi-rural school situated between Basingstoke and Newbury, with over 1000 students aged 11-16. We offer a broad and balanced curriculum and have high expectations of our students. We have a strong ethos, driven by our core values of ambition, commitment, respect, excellence and community.  The school had an OFSTED rating of “Good” in October 2024, and we are busy consolidating the work already done whilst striving to improve our school in every way to gain better outcomes for our students.

The school is a friendly and stimulating environment in which to work. The Senior Leadership Team and Governing Body are committed to the wellbeing of all staff and students at the school. We recognise that our staff are a precious and valuable resource at the school, given their commitment to providing high quality learning experiences and personalised pastoral support for all students. We have a Staff Charter which outlines our commitment to wellbeing and mental health in our community. We want The Hurst to be a great place to learn and also a great place to work for all members.

Professional Development

The Hurst School is committed to creating an environment where staff at all levels, both Teaching and Support Staff, are able to grow and develop:

  • Continuing Professional Development is prioritised and there is an excellent programme delivered in-house. This is regularly contributed to by staff at all levels as we seek to share best practice.
  • All staff have access to The National College, an online training provider who provide high level professional development in a broad and varied range of knowledge and skills, ensuring that training can be tailored to the individual.
  • The school invests in providing training opportunities that arise externally and staff are actively encouraged to play an active part in Subject Network Groups.
  • Staff are supported to complete qualifications that will enhance their development. We have several members of staff engaging in Masters Level Degrees and PhDs, as well as the suite of NPQs (National Professional Qualifications), for example in Senior Leadership and Leading Teaching.

Additional Benefits

On the school site is Miss Polly’s, The Hurst Nursery, which provides childcare for local families as well as discounted rates for school staff. It is rated Good by OFSTED. Also situated on the site is The Hurst Leisure, which encompasses a fully equipped gym and a dedicated functional fitness area. There is a weekly programme of fitness classes, plus a squash and badminton court and an on-site hairdresser. Construction of a new 3G pitch began in Autumn 2024. Staff working at the school are also eligible for discounted rates at The Hurst Leisure.
